Leicester City
Leicester City spent four of the nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18 in the Premier League and five in the Championship. They were champions in 2015/16. They won one major trophy: the Premier League title. Over those nine summers they paid £168.4m in transfer fees and took in £84.4m, a net spend of £84m.
No club in this game has a real story quite like Leicester City's. Fourth in the Championship in 2009/10, a couple of mid-table seasons, a play-off exit in 2012/13, and then 102 points and the title in 2013/14. They survived their first Premier League season in 14th and in 2015/16 won the whole thing with 81 points, with a squad assembled for a fraction of what their rivals spent.
The aftermath was a slow dismantling. N'Golo Kanté left for Chelsea for £32m that summer and Danny Drinkwater followed for £35m a year later. Islam Slimani, Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho arrived for big fees, and Leicester settled into 12th and then ninth.
Which leaves an odd 115.football challenge. Leicester's real decade already contains a miracle, so the money is not about winning one title. It is about keeping Kanté and Drinkwater, building on 2015/16, and winning a second.
