Chelsea
Chelsea played all nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18 in the Premier League. They were champions in 2009/10, 2014/15 and 2016/17. They won nine major trophies: three league titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, three FA Cups and the League Cup. Over those nine summers they paid £663.9m in transfer fees and took in £257.5m, a net spend of £406.4m. In 115.football they get City’s £900m instead.
Chelsea are the one club in this game that hardly needed the money. Across these nine seasons they won three league titles, in 2009/10, 2014/15 and 2016/17, with the FA Cup as well in the first of those for a Double. The Champions League arrived in 2011/12, a season in which they finished only sixth in the league, and the Europa League a year later. Add three FA Cups and a League Cup and it is the most decorated decade on the site.
They spent heavily and sold shrewdly. Eden Hazard came from Lille for £32m in 2012. David Luiz went to PSG for £50m in 2014 and came back for £34m two years later. Romelu Lukaku, though, was sold to Everton for £28m and ended up at Manchester United for £75m.
So what does £900m change at Stamford Bridge? The slump to tenth in 2015/16, for one. And with hindsight, a certain Belgian striker never leaves.
