Burnley

2009/10 to 2017/18

Burnley spent four of the nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18 in the Premier League and five in the Championship. Their best finish was 7th, in 2017/18. They didn’t win a major trophy. Over those nine summers they paid £82.1m in transfer fees and took in £70.8m, a net spend of £11.2m. In 115.football they get City’s £900m instead.

Burnley were the yo-yo club that learned to stop bouncing. Relegated from the Premier League in 2009/10, back as runners-up in 2013/14, down again in 2014/15, then champions of the Championship in 2015/16 with 93 points. This time they stayed, and in 2017/18 finished seventh, good enough for a place in Europe.

They managed it while selling their best players. Jay Rodriguez went to Southampton, Charlie Austin to QPR and Danny Ings to Liverpool. Michael Keane left for Everton for £25m in 2017, and Andre Gray, bought from Brentford for £9m, was sold on to Watford for £18.5m.

Burnley's 115.football save is about keeping the good ones. Ings, Austin and Rodriguez in the same squad is a lot of goals. Add Keane at the back, stay up in 2009/10, and the yo-yo years simply disappear.
